To Scream or Not to Scream??!!

As a Mama, I get it.  There is a point...where all your patience has been depleted and the frustration level has been met.  Your voice raises a level (or two), your breathing starts to race, and your done...you have nothing left.  I've been there...I get it.
But, as a teacher...I cannot accept it.  I've heard moms talk about their childrens' teachers as screamers or non-screamers.  I think about my own soft-spoken, easily spooked 5 year old, being a pupil in the midst of a screamer.  I cannot imagine it.
And what are they screaming about?  Behavior?  Assignments?  How do the students react?  Do they fear their teacher?  How do your own children react and does it change their outlook on school?

Great Topic Stephanie! As a child I grew up among a few teachers who were " Yellers" and trust me.... It was very unpleasant! This is one of the reasons I grew up "hating math!" I felt I was bad and useless at it because I was afraid to ask the teacher How to do a problem or to explain the problem to me again. I believe that a teacher can make you love and or hate a subject. As for " yelling" at your kids as a parent.... Sometimes that's the only language they understand! Lol

Before I had children, I think I may have taken teaching too lightly. I did not realize the magnitude of my responsibility. Here I was, a teacher of 21 students being told by their parents, "Please, take my child. I completely trust you to have him/her for an entire day, 5 days a week!" Imagine allowing your children to go into the hands of someone who makes him/her feel inferior or "bad and useless." I have to say that was the scariest thing for me, sending Annalina to her first day of kindergarten. Thankfully, her teacher is fabulous and an extension of what we try to do in our home!

I agree, great topic Stephanie! My oldest will be going to kindergarten next year and I am soo worried that she will get a "screamer" who will not understand her and how she needs to be talked to! You see, my daughter was diagnosed by a developmental/behavioral pediatrician w/ general and social anxiety and a maybe selective mutism! She requires a teacher who will not be a "screamer" since she is already scared of everything anyway! These teachers need to realize that the foundation on which our children will love or hate school is being built in the first couple years of school!! First impressions have a lasting affect!

I absolutely agree. As a teacher and a mom, I want nothing more than my children/students to "want to learn." It does not have to be entertainment all day, but to "want to learn" is key. It is scary, Kerry! Sending your baby off for the first time takes major guts! I toyed with homeschooling my oldest because I obsessed over whether or not her needs would be met in a class of 18-20 other kids. There are awesome teachers - I have seen them in action, but it is so important to be an advocate when your own child does not get the awesome teacher. I expect excellence, not perfection. I just want the best educational experience for my kids. I expect it from myself as a teacher! Keep me updated on your daughter - I would love to hear how she does with school!

I have no idea why I didn't see this before now! I too toyed w/ the idea of homeschooling but I really don't have the patience for it but I also feel that if she gets the right teacher, she will get the best education in the school! Her social anxiety is soo bad and she needs to be in a group of peers while being "pushed" to socialize w/out me even remotely being involved! I am really hoping that my daughter is going to do well in school but I am sooo scared for her! She is already obssessing about Kindergarten and how scared she is and how she doesn't want to go!! We had her CPSE meeting and she will be getting more services in Kindergarten than she ever did in preschool, so I am hoping this will make a huge difference! It is soo hard for her w/ the sensory processing disorder, social anxiety and selective mutism b/c if it isn't one thing that is getting to her or making her scared it is another!! I will keep you updated on how she does in school!

My mind is flooded with all the topics in education and thought a blog may help getting the information out to our clients.  As an elementary/special education teacher, Literacy Specialist, and mama of 4 young children, I never stop learning!  My students are always my teachers.
