A Day of Learning for Ages 11-13, Mondays 9:00-1:30 pm (April 10-May 15, 2023)
Living as an Author:
9:00-10:00 am
Real writing occurs in every experience and observation. Authors witness seed ideas growing at the turn of every corner. Students will be armed with their personal “writer’s notebook” and build strategies of an author. Knowledge of spelling and grammar will help the authors properly arrange words in sentences. Literature written by professional authors will be used as models of great writing across various genres.
Tuttle Twins Book Talk:
10:15-11:15 am
We will be reading and discussing the Tuttle Twins Book 5 "The Road to Surfdom" during our class. It is encouraged to purchase and read this edition, so that participation in the discussion is heightened. Our open conversations will include, but not be limited to topics such as individualism, corporate fascism, eminent domain and entrepreneurship.
Kidbilt:
10:15-11:45 am
At kidbilt we offer classes in woodshop for kids. Students work with hand tools such as hammers, screw drivers, drills and pull saws to make their projects while exploring the fundamental concepts of math, geometry, and physics. We teach the whole process from planning, measuring, preparing to and building projects such as step stools, planter boxes, bird feeders, model vehicles, skate boards and treasure chests. Students work with their hands while developing physical skills, spatial and mechanical reasoning, and acquiring understanding of materials and conceptual thinking. We love seeing proud smiles when students take their projects home to be used in their every day life!
Chess Masters:
12:00-1:00 pm
Using a large demonstration chessboard, students will better understand various topics including tactics, strategy, and the nuances of positional understanding. There will be ample time to play casual games with each other with focused assistance from the instructor. We will learn the basics and delve into more complex topics for all students who demonstrate interest and aptitude.
15 minute supervised breaks will follow the 9:00 am, 10:15 am and 11:30 am classes, with time for children to play in the fenced-in backyard, eat snacks and socialize.
Lunch/Recess:
1:00-2:00 pm
Optional time to eat and chat with friends. We are happy to offer this time for FREE. An adult from each family must be present to ensure appropriate supervision.
10% Sibling Discounts Available. Please register 1 child and list the additional siblings in text box. A separate, discounted invoice will be sent.
